The search continues in the area of the Potomac River after 20-year-old Towson University student Nazir Bell went missing while swimming near Great Falls on Sunday evening, June 15, 2026. Emergency crews have described the ongoing operation as an intensive, multi-agency effort involving land, water, and air rescue teams.

According to authorities, Nazir Bell, from Germantown, Maryland, was swimming near the Billy Goat Trail A and Sandy Landing areas when he became separated from his group shortly after 6 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing him struggling in the water before he disappeared beneath the surface. He was last seen wearing blue shorts.

The disappearance prompted an immediate emergency response from multiple agencies, including swift-water rescue teams, park police, and county fire departments from both Maryland and Virginia. Rescue personnel deployed boats, helicopters, and sonar equipment in an effort to locate the missing student. Despite extensive overnight searches, no trace of him was found.

Operations were temporarily suspended late Sunday night due to limited visibility and safety concerns but resumed early Monday morning. Officials emphasized that the search remains active and ongoing, with teams continuing to cover difficult terrain and fast-moving water conditions.

The Potomac River near Great Falls is known for its strong currents, sudden drop-offs, and dangerous underwater formations, all of which have made rescue operations particularly challenging. Authorities have repeatedly warned the public about the risks associated with swimming in restricted or unmanaged areas of the river.

Nazir Bell’s disappearance has left his family, friends, and university community deeply concerned. Classmates and loved ones have expressed hope for his safe recovery while also grappling with the uncertainty surrounding the situation. Towson University has acknowledged the incident and is offering support resources to affected students.

Search coordinators reported that as many as dozens of first responders were involved at peak operation, including specialized swift-water rescue teams and aerial support units. Despite advanced search technology and coordinated efforts, the river conditions have made visibility and underwater detection extremely difficult.

As the search continues, officials are urging the public to avoid the area to allow rescue teams to operate safely and efficiently. They have also reiterated water safety guidance, stressing the importance of avoiding dangerous currents and respecting posted warnings along the river.

At this time, Nazir Bell has not been located, and the search remains ongoing. Authorities continue to treat the case as a missing person emergency and are committed to exhausting all possible search efforts.

The community remains hopeful for a breakthrough, as loved ones wait anxiously for updates in a situation that has deeply affected everyone involved.

His name continues to be at the center of an active search effort, and officials urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.
